Axel Hütte was born in Essen, Germany, in 1951. He lives and works in Düsseldorf and Berlin, Germany.
Hütte is among the leading protagonists of contemporary landscape photography and has made an essential contribution to the self-awareness of the photographic medium in visual arts since the late 1970s.
Together with colleagues from the Düsseldorf School under Bernd and Hilla Becher - such as Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, or Thomas Struth - Hütte represents the tableau-like character of the photo as an adequate counterpart to the painting.
